Bone and Sinus Augmentation for Dental Implants

Sinus lift surgery

Implantology

Sinus lift surgery is a surgical intervention meant to prepare the bone support for the placement of dental implants. Usually, sinus lift is chosen when the maxillary sinus is too big or too lowered, which means that the alveolar bone cannot support a dental implant.
Maxillary sinuses are two cavities filled with air located at the back of the cheeks, in the maxillary bone. Each maxillary sinus is covered by a membrane similar to a balloon.

When the bone wall between the sinus and the mouth is very thin, the insertion of an implant becomes impossible. In this case, the placement of the implant is only possible after a sinus lift surgery (lifting of the sinus membrane).

Sinus lifting is a surgery where artificial or natural bone is inserted by lifting the sinus membrane.
We at the Omnia Dental clinic also add membranes especially obtained from the patient’s blood through the A-PRF technique. These membranes help speed up the healing process and stimulate tissue regeneration.
This combination has been shown to have exceptional, predictable and lasting results both by the experience of our medics and by many studies.

What is the Sinus Lift Procedure Like?

THE SURGICAL PROCESS

There are two types of sinus lift surgery: internal sinus lift and external sinus lift. The difference between them is the area where the surgical intervention on the sinus takes place. The decision regarding the type of intervention rests on the dentist and depends on the patient’s bone structure.
The added bone quantity required for each patient is different. It is approximated after the patient undergoes a CT scan and X-rays that offer the dentist all the information necessary for the surgery.

Research has shown that dental implants are more successful in those cases where  implants were placed in grafted sinuses when compared to non-grafted sinuses.

INTERNAL SINUS LIFT
In the case of internal sinus lift, the sinus membrane is lifted in the same sitting as the insertion of the implant. This method is chosen when a small bone addition is required, about 1-2 mm. It is done by using an instrument that gently presses the sinus membrane until it is lifted. Addition material is then inserted in the space created. Finally, the dental implant is inserted.
EXTERNAL SINUS LIFT
External sinus lift is recommended especially in cases of massive bone resorption. The addition material is inserted through a lateral “window” made in the external wall of the sinus and is protected with a resorbable collagen membrane. These biocompatible materials stick to the existing bone and turn into bone after a period of 6-9 months. After this time frame, the implants are inserted in the newly created bone. However, if the bone is strong enough, implants can be inserted in it even during the external sinus lift procedure.

As is the case with any other dental surgery, the entire process will be carried out with local anesthesia, so that the patient does not feel any pain or discomfort.

What should i expect after a Sinus Lift?

POST-SURGERY

Depending on the situation, the dentist will recommend a preventive pharmaceutical treatment, 5-7 day of antibiotic, anti-inflammatory medicine for pain control, local applications of cold compresses for the first few days and other precautions which the patient must follow in order to fully heal.
It is strongly recommended that the patient DOES NOT blow his or her nose, sneeze forcefully or put any sort of pressure on the maxillary sinuses.
Don’t be scared if there are slight nose bleedings – this is natural.
After a surgery like this, there is the possibility of swelling in the area. The peak of the swelling comes 48-72 hours from the surgery. The pain is bearable and controllable with anti-inflammatory medicine. The patient may also notice a bruise on the cheek that disappears in approximately  a week. All of this is normal during the first week and will disappear.
